O'Brien's focus here is apel and their churchyards in the Lower Broadway section of Manhattan. In the first half of the volume O'Brien takes the reader on a "tour" of the two churches, stopping at a tombstone here or referring to a record there in order to elaborate about someone of Irish descent from his vast study of Irish American history and genealogy. The second part of the book consists of a variety of verbatim transcriptions copied from the records of Trinity and St. Paul's, as well as other sources, and referring to several thousand individuals. The index has 40,000 entries arranged alphabetically by the name of the testator, showing his rank, occupation, or condition; his town or county of residence; and the year when the estate was probated. Before the loss of the original wills, Sir William Betham had made abstracts of the genealogical data in the wills from 1536 to 1800. In 1897 Sir Arthur Vic been copied or abstracted prior to the 1922 fire which destroyed all the wills deposited at the Public Record Office in Dublin. [R101455]

Arranged by Dioceses, and preceded by maps showing in which Dioceses the various Irish counties are situated, the Indexes provide the name of the testator, his parish, county, and the date of probate and are, in short, complete lists of Diocesan wills proved up until 1857, when the various ecclesiastical courts were abolished by Act of Parliament and superseded by the Probate Court.
