Troubleshooting Installation Problems - Windows 3.1

You can resolve most install issues by performing one of the tasks below. The first task is to disable caching on your CD-ROM drive. Next, you will want to make sure all other non-essential applications are not currently running. If that doesn't work, you will want to clean your CD-ROM, and finally, if these steps fail, there is an MS-DOS program on the Family Tree Maker CD-ROM that you can use to install Family Tree Maker.

Disable Caching of CD-ROM

First, you need to exit Windows. To do this, follow the steps below:

  1. From Program Manager's File menu, select Exit Windows. You will now be at an MS-DOS prompt.

  2. At the MS-DOS prompt, type smartdrv d-, where d corresponds to the drive letter for your CD-ROM drive.

  3. Press Enter. This will disable caching of the CD-ROM drive.

  4. Once you have returned to the MS-DOS prompt, type win and press Enter. Windows will start.

Close All Applications

Often, if other applications are running (especially virus protection programs) at the same time you install Family Tree Maker, they may cause difficulties. This is why many programs, including Family Tree Maker, ask you to close any currently running applications at the beginning of the setup process. Follow the steps below to close your applications in Windows 3.1:

  1. From the Program Manager, press the CTRL+ESC keys at the same time.

Windows displays the Task List Dialog box.

  2. From this dialog box you can close any single open program by highlighting it and selecting End Task.

  3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 until all programs except for Program Manager are closed.

Clean the CD

Sometimes newly-manufactured CD-ROMs have a light film on them. This is enough to make the CD-ROM unreadable on most drives. However, by cleaning the CD, you can make it work fine.

  1. Wipe the shiny side of the CD with something dry, soft, and lint-free.

When wiping the CD, wipe from the center outward, not in a circular motion, and be sure to wipe the whole CD.

  2. Now you can begin the installation procedure again.

Using the DOS Install Tool

For the rare instances when the steps above do not work correctly, there is an MS-DOS install program on the Family Tree Maker CD-ROM. The program is called TS.EXE, and the instructions for using it are below.

  1. Exit Microsoft Windows.

  2. Put the Family Tree Maker program installation disc into your CD-ROM drive.

  3. Type D: and press Enter.

The D stands for drive D. If you are installing from a different drive, type that letter instead. For example, if your CD-ROM drive is drive E, type E: and press Enter.

  4. Type TS W=C:\WINDOWS I=C:\FTW

These instruction are an example where C:\WINDOWS is the location of Microsoft Windows on your computer and C:\FTW is the directory where you want to install Family Tree Maker. If the actual paths on your computer are different substitute the proper ones accordingly.

  5. Press Enter.

You will see many lines scroll across your screen. When you see the run-time error then you know the installation process is complete.

  6. Type WIN and press Enter.

    Microsoft Windows starts.

  7. You will need to create an icon for Family Tree Maker.

Please consult your Microsoft Windows user manual for instructions on creating an icon. However, first follow the instructions below to verify that Family Tree Maker is installed properly.
