My name is Jim Baichtal, my great great grandfather died in Sac City Iowa in May 14, 1909 as John Schyler Baichtal. He was born on July 18, 1822, St. James or St. Jacobs Howarter Luth and Ref Church, Upper Mahanony Twp., Northumberland, Pennsylvania. He was born Johann Bechtel, son of John and Catharina Bechtel. Interesting enough. during John's life he moved to Iowa and then to Buchanan, MI before finally traveling to Iowa. It is possible that Catharina Bechtel was Euliana Brosius who is reported as marrying John Beachtel. The confusing part is who John Bechtel was. In my great grandfathers obit he says his father dies when he was young. I think John and Catharine (Euliana ?) must have been born between 1795 and 1800, and married between 1815 and 1820. John Jacob Bechtel keeps showing up near my folks. I wonder if he was a brother of uncle of John Bechtel, my gg grandfather. I wonder after John died, Catherina or Euliana moved in with John Jacob Bechtel then moved to Buchanon MI to be with her brother Abraham Brosius? Can either of you two help? My grandfathers obit states the following...."Mr. Baichtal was born near Shamokin, Northumberland county, Pa., July 18, 1822. When a mere lad he walked to Ohio and worked there, saving money with which he brought his mother west. He went to Michigan and resided there a number of years in the vicinity of Buchanon." Anothe obit states..."Grandpa Baichtal as he was familiarly known was born on the Shamokin Creek, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania, on the 18th day of July 1822. When he was but a mere lad he walked to Ohio, where he worked for some time, saving money with which to bring his mother west, his father having died when he was very young. He afterward went to Michigan where he lived for several years before coming further west. Later, however, he came to Iowa, settling at Adel, in Dallas County, where he was united in marriage with Mrs. Louisa Wright, whom he has survived six years." Thank you...JFB
