The statement of David Connelly before the Floyd County, Kentucky Fiscal Court  

August 25th, 1823

 

                David Conley, an old Revolutionary Soldier, presented in open court a schedule and statement which is in the following words and figures, towit;

                 On this day, August 25th, 1823, personally appeared in open court David Conley, aged about 76 years, a resident citizen of the county, after being duly sworn according to the law, doth on his oath declare that he served in the Revolutionary War as follows;

                He enlisted into the service of the United States some time in or about the year 1776 for the term of 18 months against the common enemy under the command of Captain Harris Halich in the 67th North Carolina Regiment commanded by Col. John Williams, who commanded the North Carolina Regular troops in North Carolina her on Continental Establishment, was afterward put under the command of Col. James Martin, who went to Cross Creek and attacked the Scotch on a bridge at Cross Creek and that he was in the battle at Cross Creek Bridge, that he served out his full term of enlistment and obtained an honorable discharge at the expiration of his term of service, and that said discharge got burned in his house by fire at a time when he got his house burnt, that he never was in any general engagement or battle but was in many small engagements against the Tories in different parts of the country, and I, David Conley, do solemnly swear that I was a resident citizen of the United States on the 18th of March, 1818, and that he has no other property other than what is contained in the schedule here unto annexed and by me subscribed;

                                SCHEDULE:                       2 cows and calves worth $10 each $20.00

                                                                                One set of turning tools worth        10.00

                                                                                Debts owed me                                                    4.00        

                                                                                                                                                 $34.00

 

                That my family consists of my wife only, named Susannah, aged about 73 years, who is entirely unable from age and infirmity to contribute anything to my support, that my occupation is that of a farmer, but I am from age and infirmity unable to pursue it, that myself and my wife are living with our children and are entirely depending on their bounty and charity for support, and that it is from my indigent circumstances  that I did on the 15th day of June, 1818, make my original declaration and application for a pension, which is herewith respectfully refereed to and marked A, but has failed as yet to receive a pension certificate owing to some irregularity in the proceedings.
