The 1920s home of Grace Lillian Wright-Baldock and husband, Walker A. Baldock and family. The home is next to the "Amherst Mill" that was owned by the Baldocks. It brought the first electricity to the city in the early 1920s.

- Amherst Mill -- Owned by the Baldocks (1920-36) (66 KB)
The Amherst Milling Company was owned and operated by Walker Baldock. In the early 1920s it provided the first reliable electricity to the town. The mill ground corn and grain for the surrounding area farmers (and still does!). Walker's arm was caught in the milling machinery, and because no one was around to help him, he was forced to "cut his arm free of the equipment before bleeding to death." After recovering, he continued to operate the mill with only one arm. Walker and Grace and family lived next to the mill (see pic of house). The children used to swim in the stream that powered the mill.

Some descendants of John Talley Wright gather at Connie Dean Vest's home. This was the first Wright family get-together since 1984. During the '70s and until 1984 there was an annual summer "Wright" picnic at Bryant Park, in Richmond, VA.

Robert Wright's signed and noted photo-portrait was found in family belongings, probably indicating he fits in somewhere. All I know is that he was born April 16, 1840 in Norfolk, Virginia, served in the Confederate Navy on the gun-boat "Jamestown" (as 3rd Assistant Engineer), and participated in the Monitor-Merrimac battle. He later served on the Iron-clad "Richmond"; In S.C. in the torpedo fleet; and finally out of Wilmington, N.C. in "blockade running."
