Notes for J
OHN ENCELL:
.John and his wife Sophia left Bristol, England on 15 May, 1806 and arrived in Philadelphia, Pa on July 25, 1806, Sophia died on February 14, 1807 in Philadelphia. John and the four little children left for Pittsburgh that same year.
He stayed in Pittsburgh for several years, . He was very active in the Christian movement during the 1800 period. Several of the family and Grand children were ministers.
. About 1828 they were located in ILL preaching with the Disciples of Christ. His very good friend Alexander Campbell started Bethany College, and was the leader of the Christian movement.
John was a partner in a Flint Glass Works in Pittsburgh, Pa.
The plant was named Trevor & Encell , period of operation was 1812 to 1818.
An ad for help was found in the Heinz Center In Pittsburgh, PA, under " glassblowing" for the year of 1813,( Wanted Immediately , two or three sober steady lads, from fourteen to sixteen years of age, as apprentices to the above business--Apply at our manufactory, on the south side of the Mongongahela, opposite Wood Street. Trevor & Encell,) Cash given for Pot and Pearl Ashes. Pittsburgh, July 13, 1813.
John moved across the Mongongahela River and built another flint glasshouse and ran it successfully until about 1822, his business became so large he could not attend to it alone, and he took a partner named Bolton, who proved to be a rascal and broke the the plant up.

An Add for Trevor & Encell, Dated Pittsburgh, Dec. 23, 1812 tf.
FLINT GLASS MANUFACTORY - Respectfully inform their friends and the public in general that they have established a FLINT GLASS MANUFACTORY on the South side of Wood Street, Pittsburgh, Orders for any articles in their line will be thankfully received and promptly executed. N.B.- A generous price given for Pot or Pearl Ash.
Unfortunately, on April 13, 1816, Mrs. Eliza Trevor and her infant daughter died, and were buried in the same tomb the following Thursday morning. This may have been a factor that led to Trevor's decision to advertise his one-half share of the glassworks, and the Lead Factory associated with it, for sale. An advertisement in the Pittsburgh Gazette May 1, 1816 announces that the firm will now be known as Bolton, Encell & Co. On July 18,1818 the company was dissolved and the property assigned for the benefit of their creditors, A sign appeared which read " Glass, selling off cheap"
Flint & Green Glass, of the late firm of Bolton & Encell & Co. on the corner of Front and Wood Streets, By Order of The Assignees. The apprentice Glassmen were sent to a Wellsburg, W. Va glasshouse. John then moved his family to Wheeling, West Virginia , and was affiliated with Charles Knox and McGee Glassworks, He worked there until his death in 1829. He named his son Charles Knox Encell after his good friend Charles Knox.

Log and Keel and Flat Boats- The Brooke County Genealogy Society, 1997
Excerpts from a Log and Keel and Flat Boats traveling the Ohio and Mississippi from Wellsburg to New Orleans between 1834-1837. Disclosing some interesting facts about this mode of transporting produce and goods.
The ship Capt, would received 1/3 of the profit made on the trip. The boats were made in Wellsburg and cost about $184.87 to build. Sometimes the boat would be sold in New Orleans for the lumber or returned to Wellsburg for another trip. Stops were made in Pittsburgh,Wheeling, Cincinnati and other points along the river to pick up or discharge cargo.
The Wheeling glass plant was operating under the name of Encell and Plunket, their shipment was usually worth $740.00 and $101.05 each trip , and consisted of bottles ,cut glass and other glassware. Also Bakewell used this method of shipping goods from Pittsburgh, their usual shipment value was about $89.70 (plate glass and Stoneware).
John was serving as a minister in McLean County Illinois and returned to Wheeling in 1828, one year before he died. This is recorded in the History of the Restoration Movement in Illinois, McLean County.
The exact location of John Encell's burial is unknown at this time.
