Descendants of Clement Hancock, Sr.

Generation No. 1

1. CLEMENT1 HANCOCK, SR. was born Abt. 1750 in Prob. Virginia, and died Bef. 1820 in Prob. Wilkinson County, Georgia. He married MARY RENFROE Abt. 1775 in Prob. Wilkes County, North Carolina, daughter of ENOCH RENFROE and RACHEL RUSHING. She was born Abt. 1754 in Prob. North Carolina.

Notes for C
LEMENT HANCOCK, SR.:
First, let me make it clear that the names of the children listed for Clement Hancock and Mary Renfroe have not been documented by LW&T or land deed. A lot of circumstantial evidence has been gathered which strongly indicates that those names listed were his children. The dates of birth for these children have been deduced from census records and other documents which indicate the probable years of birth entered on the family page. There were no doubt other children, perhaps more daughters, born between William and John, but I haven't found enough evidence to list any more. jrh

A SEARCH FOR THE ANCESTORS OF CLEMENT

Although I haven't found a positive connection between Clement Hancock, Sr. of Georgia and Clement Hancock of Surry County, Virginia, I feel sure that there is a connection of some kind. Clement Hancock of Virginia was in Lawnes Creek Parish as early as 1725 at which time there is on record a land purchase. His wife's name was Antheny and they had nine children. These children are named in Clement's will dated October 31, 1758. This will was presented at court on January 19, 1759 by Clement's wife Antheny who was executrix of the will along with son William, executor. Clement had a son also named Clement who died the year following the death of his father. I have found no records of this son Clement having a son named Clement Hancock. He had a daughter, Susannah, who died very young about the time that her father died. However, Clement and Antheny Hancock's son, William, had four children: Elisha Green, born February 15, 1766; Clement, born August 22, 1770; Michael Wall Hancock; and Elisabeth Hancock, born October 27, 1776. (See below for the genealogy of the Surry County, VA Clement Hancock)

Clement Hancock, born August 22, 1770, would have been too young to be the Clement Hancock who married Mary Renfroe and lived in Georgia from the 1780's. The Georgia Clement was already married with children in 1770.

I have not been able to find a will for the Warren County, Georgia Clement Hancock or any other records which give a positive list of the children of Clement Hancock and Mary Renfroe. The names listed on the family page are probably only a partial list. There was a Joel Hancock (named for Joel Renfroe?) who was probably a son. Joel paid taxes in Wilkes County, Georgia for the years 1796. 1797. 1799 and 1800 in "S" District where Joseph Hancock and Thomas Hancock also lived.

It is believed that Clement and Mary Renfroe Hancock moved to Wilkinson County shortly after 1800. In the book THE SECOND OR 1807 LAND LOTTERY OF GEORGIA, by Silas E. Lucas, Jr., 1968, p. 94, is the following entry: "Clem Hancock, Warren Co., Devereaux's Militia District; Lot 92; District 17 in Wilkinson County, Georgia."

On the same page is a similar entry for Joseph Hancock who also lived in Devereaux's Militia District. Joseph drew Lot # 26 in District 7 in Baldwin County. The 1807 land lottery was devoted to settling Wilkinson and Baldwin Counties.

On page 96 of the above mentioned book is an entry for John Hancock of Wilkes County, Milner's Military District. John drew Lot 13, District 19 in Baldwin County.

In his book WILKINSON COUNTY GEORGIA HISTORICAL COLLECTIONS, page 8-9, Joe Maddox lists the men from several neighboring counties who were drafted into the Georgia Militia. One of those men was a Joel Hancock. It is very likely that Joel was a son of Clement and Mary, named for Mary's brother Joel Renfroe who died before Enoch Renfroe wrote his will in 1802 in Wilkes County. However, I have not been able to document any of the children of Clement and Mary Renfroe Hancock. jrh

In his book WILKINSON COUNTY GEORGIA HERITAGE COLLECTIONS, 1999 edition, Joe Maddox gives statistics on several Hancock women. Maddox lists the members of Liberty Baptist Church which was created in 1837 as a result of disagreements among the members of Mt. Nebo Baptist Church. Among the members of Liberty Church were Caroline Hancock, Elizabeth Hancock who married Jonathan Johns, Eveline Hancock, Mary Brady Hancock, the wife of Joseph Hancock, and Sara Ann Hancock. It was not stated whether Caroline, Eveline and Sara Ann were the wives of Hancock men or were themselves the daughters of a Hancock. It is possible, even probable, that some of these Hancock women were the daughters of Clement, Sr. and Mary Renfroe Hancock. However, there are no documents to establish such a relationship. jrh

March 26, 1998: Below are additions and corrections to information concerning Clement Hancock, Sr. and Clement Hancock, Jr. jrh

l. Information concerning the death of Clement, Sr. which was included in the first printing of ROOTS, BRANCHES AND TWIGS was in error. The date given for Clement, Sr.'s death on his family page was actually the date of Clement, Jr.'s death. This error has been corrected so that any future printing should be correct.

2. Additions and corrections to the family pages of Clement, Sr. and Clement, Jr. have been made based on information included in a batch of material loaned to me by Martha Jo (Burnett) Fountain. This material came into her possession after the death of her aunt, Elizabeth Mary "Lizzie Mae" Hancock, a great-great granddaughter of Clement, Sr., who had done much research on the Hancock/Hatcher families. Among the material referred to above are letters to Miss Hancock (called Aunt Bebe by Martha Jo) from Miss Blanche E. Reinhardt, 1100 S.W. Second Avenue, Miami, Florida 33130. The letters are dated from March 18, 1975 to July 11, 1979 and explore the relationship and ancestry of both ladies. Miss Hancock's father and Mrs. Reinhardt's grandmother were brother and sister.

3. From a letter dated 27 April 1979 from Miss Reinhardt to Miss Hancock: "I agree with you. The Hancock family of Surrey/Sussex county is definitely ours, BUT HOW DOES ONE LINK THEM UP. Mrs. Evers and I have been corresponding about this for years. There were two Clement Hancocks in South Carolina during the Revolution. The Captain who died was the son of a William Hancock of 96th District, perhaps. There was also another Clement Hancock who served in the Militia and claimed compensation after the War, c. 1785. I think that was ours. Our Clement was probably born c. 1750."

If Captain Clement Hancock, "son of a William Hancock," was the grandson of Clement and Antheny Hancock of Surrey County, Virginia and if he died during the Revolution then he obviously can not be the Clement who came to Georgia. I have not researched the children of Clement and Antheny Hancock so I don't know their history. jrh

March 30, 1998, further research on Clement Hancock, Sr. of Georgia, at the Washington Library, Macon, Georgia:

1790 CENSUS FOR WILKES COUNTY, GEORGIA, compiled by Frank Parker Hudson, 1988, page 40, records that Clem Hancock was present in Capt. David Neal/Neil's district which became part of Warren County in 1793. Clem's land was 100 acres of third quality oak and hickory. This Clem was probably our Clement Hancock, Sr. This information is on page 111 along with similar information on Enoch Renfroe, the father of Clement Hancock, Sr.'s wife Mary. Enoch Renfroe returned taxes on land in Capt. George Medlock's district which adjoined the district in which the Hancock family lived. Enoch's land was 150 acres also in third quality oak and hickory.

THE SECOND OR 1807 LAND LOTTERY OF GEORGIA, compiled by Silas Emmett Lucas, 1968, page 94, reveals the following under the heading WARREN COUNTY: "CLEM HANCOCK: Devereaus's Military District Lot 92 Dist. 17 County W (Wilkinson)." This Clem Hancock was no doubt Clement, Sr. as Clement, Jr. was probably not old enough to be qualified to draw in the lottery. (The 1807 Land Lottery completed the surveying and distribution of the land lots in Baldwin and Wilkinson Counties and it was probably about this time that Clement, Sr. moved his family to Wilkinson County.)

In CEMETERIES & GENEALOGY - WARREN COUNTY, GEORGIA and Immediate Vicinity - 1792-1987 by Daniel Nathan Crumpton, copyright 1987, page 238 under the heading DEED RECORDS: 2 Oct. 1810: Hancock, Clement, ID - PL (Clement was identified as Previous Landowner in this record). Again, on page 269 under the same heading: 9 Jan. 1817: Hancock, Clem, ID-PL

The above two documents indicate that Clement Hancock, Sr. moved from Warren County to Wilkinson County between 1807 and 2 October 1810 at about the same time that Major John Hatcher, Sr. moved his family to Wilkinson County. The Hancock and the Hatcher families have been associated since the late 1600s and 1700s in Henrico County, Virginia. And down through the generations there have been marriages between Hancocks and Hatchers. Clement Hancock, Sr. and Major John Hatcher, Sr. were both listed in the Warren County tax lists, paying taxes on land on Joe's Creek. Major John married Mary Brady who had a brother named Samuel. Samuel's daughter Mary Brady married Joseph Hancock the son of Clement, Sr. They also lived on Joe's Creek, according to the tax lists.

The following notes come from SOME EARLY TAX DIGEST OF GEORGIA, by Ruth Blair, 1926, and point out the probable connection of the Hancock family, the Renfroe family and the Hatcher family while in Warren County, Georgia in 1794.

p. 163: Person No. 10. Clem Hancock - Person subject to pay tax; Polls - 1; Slaves - 0; Acres of Land - 130; County in which the Lands are - Wa (Warren); Water courses and who adjoining - Joes Creek - Braddy; Amt of Tax - 2sh, 3 1/2d
p. 165: Person No. 94. Enoch Renfrow - Person paying tax; Polls - 1; Acres - 350; County - Warren; Water courses, adj. - Joes Creek - Rushin; Amt. of tax - 3sh 2 1/4d.
p. 168: Person No. 25. Patrick Brady - Person Paying tax; Polls - 1; Acres - 250; County - Warren; Water courses, adj. - Joes Creek - Hatcher & Danielly; Amt. of tax - 3sh 9 1/2d
p. 168: Person No. 47. John Hatcher - Person paying tax; Polls - 1; Slaves - 1; Acres - 400; County - Warren; Water courses, adj - Joes Creek - Braddy; Amt. of tax - 5sh 9d.
p. 168: Person No. 48. Samuel Brady - Person paying tax; Polls - 1; Acres - 50; County - Warren; Water courses, adj - Joes Creek - Hatcher; Amt of tax - none listed. Samuel also listed with 150 acres in Columbia Co. on White Oak Creek adj. McGruder, Amt of tax - 2sh 11 1/2d. (probably total for both counties.)

Same book, for the year 1805:
p. 205: #40-Samuel Brady - 1 poll; 1 slave; 200 acres in Warren Co. - on Joes Creek; Grantee - Hatcher; adj. Pickard. Samuel also had 400 acres in Warren & Jefferson counties. Total amt of tax = 1dol. o7 1/2 cents.
p. 205: #56 - John Hatcher - 1 poll; 4 slaves; 900 acres; Warren Co.; Grantee - Hatcher &c.; on Joes Creek; adj Pickard. Amt of tax = 2 dol. 23 1/2cents.
p. 206: #78 - Clem Hancock - 1 poll; 0 slaves;330 acres; Warren Co.; Grantee - Bartlett; on Joes Creek; adj. Spurling; Amt of tx. = 56 cents.

NOTE: The 1820 Wilkinson County, Georgia census lists the following Hancock men: Clement Hancock, John Hancock, John T. Hancock, Ralph Hancock and William Hancock. This Clement is no doubt Clement, Jr. who moved to Crawford County, Georgia from Wilkinson County, Georgia by the 1830 census along with three brothers, William, Enoch and John. These 1820 Wilkinson County Hancocks are probably the brothers Clement, Jr., John and William who moved to Crawford County - all sons of Clement Hancock, Sr. and Mary Renfroe. The John T. Hancock may have been brother of Clement, Sr. It is believed that there was at least one brother who came to Georgia with Clement, Sr. It is also believed that Clement Hancock, Sr. had died before the 1820 census and that he and his wife Mary Renfroe are buried in Wilkinson County. I found a Hancock cemetery in Wilkinson County in the area in which the family of Major John Hatcher lived which may be where Clement, Sr. and Mary Renfroe Hancock are buried, however, there are no headstones with their names engraved. There are several rows of graves with no slabs or markers of any kind that are marked by small wooden posts at each end of the graves. So, it is possible that this is "my" Clement Hancock, Sr.'s family cemetery. jrh

Notes below concern further search for the ancestors of the Clement Hancock of 1790 Wilkes County, Georgia.

Aug. 18, 1998: During research of Lancaster County, SC records I found another Clement Hancock who was present in that county as early as 1804 and as late as 1810. This Clement was the son of Robert and Sarah Hancock. There was a William Hancock also present. In the book LANCASTER COUNTY, SOUTH CAROLINA, DEED ABSTRACTS by Silas Emmett Lucas, Jr., pub. 1981, on pages 165, 166 and 197 are the following abstracts:
      p. 165, from Deed Book G: p 8. - Robert Hancock, Clem Hancock, and William Hancock were witnesses to a land transaction on 25 Jan 1804.
      p. 166, also from Deed Book G: pp. 13-14 - Clem Hancock, Guy Wallace and George Wren were witnesses to a land transaction on 8 Feb 1806.
      p. 197, two entries from Deed Book G: (1) pp. 248-249: "Robert Hancock and wife Sarah of Lancaster Dist., for $310 to Clem Hancock of same, land on N side Waxaw Creek, adj. Wm. Porter . . . 23 Feb 1810. Signed: Robert Hancock (Seal) and Sarah (X) Hancock (Seal) Wit: William Hancock, An. Anderson, George Wren. Proved by George Wren, 19 March 1810, before James H. Witherspoon, J. Peace." (2) p. 249: "Robert Hancock of Lancaster Dist., appoints son Clement Hancock attorney . . .26 Feb. 1810. Robert Hancock (Seal) Wit: John Crawford, Nathan (X) Tomlinson. Proved by John Crawford, 26 Feb 1810, before John McClenahan, Q. U. "
NOTE: "My" Clement Hancock, Sr. was in Wilkes County, Georgia recorded on the 1790 census and on the tax lists for 1794 and 1805. jrh

Lancaster County, SC is on the northern state line, the entire length of the state away from Wilkes County, GA, so it is very unlikely that the Clem Hancock of the 1790 Wilkes Co., GA census was the son of Robert and Sarah Hancock. And, since another Clement Hancock, son of William, died during the Revolution this seems to eliminate two Clements of South Carolina as being "my" Clement, Sr. But the names Clement, William and John among the Hancock family seems quite persistent in NC., SC. and in GA.

Below is information from another source, along an entirely different tack and entered here solely from a point of interest, NOT TO BE TAKEN AS FACT. jrh

The following is quoted from the book THE GEORGIANS by Jeanette Holland Austin, 1984, pp 149-150:
"Isham Hancock, Rev. War Soldier, Georgia's Roster of the Revolution by Knight, p. 328: '1838 Cherokee Land Lottery, Revolutionary Soldiers and Widows of Revolutionary Soldiers: Isham Hancock, Welche's district, Hancock County.' His 1st w., Margaret, 2nd w., Nancy. LWT Margaret Hancock, 1/7/1812, Houston Co., names niece Betsey Walker, friend, Geo. Waller, Franklin Co. DB BB, p. 146, 1/23/1807, Isham Hancock to Charity Finch, 160 acres on br. of Eastenblee, w., Nancy, quit-claims her dower. DB F, p. 415, 9/22/1835, 'Georgia, Franklin County,' Isham Hancock to Benjamin Cleveland, 202 1/2 acres, Lot 182, 6th dist., Houston Co. Isham Hancock lived in that portion of Franklin County, which later became Habersham Co. The 1830 Census lists him in Habersham Co. Issue established from various estates, following:
"I. Clement Hancock, named after Rev. War Soldier, Clement Hancock, who was slaugh(t)ered as prisoner on board ship, 'Pack Horse' 5/17/1781, South Carolinians in the Revolution by Ervin. Clement b. 1794/1804, Franklin Co. Ga., listed 1820 Wilkinson Co. Ga. Census, near the home of his bro., John, having one son under ten. His bro., John, was admr. of his est. 1849 Crawford Co. Ga., V. E, p. 273, 304-5, Est. of J. Clement Hancock."

NOTE: The Clement Hancock referred to above is evidently my g.g.g. grandfather of Crawford County, but he was named Clement, Jr. after his own father Clement, Sr. of the 1790 Wilkes County, GA census. So, he can't be the son of Isham Hancock described by Austin. Clement, Jr. did have brothers Enoch (named for his grandfather Enoch Renfroe), John, William and Joseph, but they were all sons of Clement Hancock, Sr. NOT Isham Hancock, the Revolutionary War soldier. I have not found an Isham Hancock connected to my Clement Hancock's family. Also, I have found no record of my Clement's family being in Franklin County, Georgia. When Clement, Jr. died in Crawford Co. GA in 1849, one John Hancock was the administrator of his estate, but, Clement, Jr. had a son named John as well as a brother named John. Both were in Crawford County and both survived Clement, Jr. It is difficult to know which John was the administrator. However, the Anual Returns to November Term 1849, Crawford County concerning the estate of Clement Hancock, dec'd has the following at the end, "Returned On the Oath of John C. Hancock Admr." Clement, Jr.'s son was John Clark Hancock so the administrator of Clement, Jr.'s estate must have been his son.

Austin names four other sons of Isham Hancock: II. Enoch, b. 1780/1790; III. John Hancock, b. 1786, SC (father of Morgan Hancock); IV. William Hancock, b. 1770/1780, SC; and, V. Joseph Hancock, b. 1780/1790. THESE WERE ALL SONS OF CLEMENT HANCOCK, SR AND MARY RENFROE. It is true that Morgan's father was John Hancock. However, this John was the son of Clement Hancock and Mary Renfroe, not of Isham Hancock. Clement, Jr. and his brothers John and William and Enoch were all in Crawford County from 1830 until their deaths and are buried in Crawford County, Georgia. jrh

NOTE: According to Patti Gettinger, a newly found cousin, Clement, Sr. and wife Mary Renfroe Hancock were buried somewhere near McIntyre, Georgia in Wilkinson County. 10/13/1998 JRH.

12/31/98: Research of Onslow County, NC turned up another Clement Hancock. From the book RECORDS OF ONSLOW COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA, VOL. I, by Zae Hargett Gwynn, 1961, p. 346, comes the following under the heading "Deed Book O (1785-1788): "57 - July 7, 1787. The land of Thomas Hancock, deceased, is divided to his three sons: William, who received the plantation whereon Thomas Hancock lately lived containing 75 acres; to Clem Hancock the lower plantation on the Bay, containing 75 acres which formerly belonged to Mrs. Grace Edwards, deceased; to John Hancock the land formerly belonging to Robert Smith and conveyed to Thomas Hancock by Richard Jarrott containing 100 acres. Signed William Gibs, R. W. Snead, John Edwards."

The above Hancock family seems to fit "my" Clement's family pretty well. The three brothers, William, Clement and John, could have sold out their inheritance in Onslow County, NC and have moved into South Carolina and on into Georgia by, or before, the 1790 Warren County Tax List on which Clement Hancock and Enoch Renfroe appear. But, I find it strange that the Georgia Clement Hancock, Sr. did not name a son Thomas. Also, Clement would have had to have been in or near Anson County, North Carolina to have met Mary Renfroe and married her by about 1775. Anson County is about 150 miles west of Onslow County. Enoch Renfroe and several of his sons were granted land in Anson County, NC during the middle and late 1700s. jrh

A posting to the Hancock list website on June 27, 1999 by Lisa Craven refers to the three sons of Thomas Hancock of the 1787 Onslow County, North Carolina deed. She says, "Clement Hancock, son of Thomas Hancock, b 15 Oct 1700 d. 1787 in Onslow Co., NC and his wife Nancey ____. Clement's siblings were William, John, & Enoch. Clement and brothers disappear from the records of NC about the time they would have reached adulthood."

If there was a brother named Enoch, he wasn't mentioned in the Onslow County deed. My Clement Hancock and his wife Mary Renfroe named a son Enoch, presumably after Mary's father, Enoch Renfroe. Also, "my" Clement Hancock, Sr. would probably have been about 37 years old in 1787 and had been married to Mary since about 1775.

Another Hancock family in North Carolina was that of John Hancock whose will was probated in Cumberland County in July, 1772. This John Hancock had a son, Clement, born 23 September 1770, in Cumberland County, who was named in John's will along with sons Robert, William and John. "My" Clement was probably about 20 years old in 1770.

At the time that John Hancock and his sons Robert, William, John and Clement were in Cumberland County, North Carolina, Enoch Renfroe was in the adjoining county of Anson County to the west. By 1772, Clement Hancock, Sr. and Mary Renfroe were probably already married with several children. By reason of time and proximity, and names, this Hancock family seems to be the most likely to have been some part of the family of "my" Clement, Sr. jrh

Notes for M
ARY RENFROE:
If Mary's parents followed the "naming pattern" prevalent at the time Mary was born, she was named for her maternal grandmother. This would lead us to believe that perhaps Mary Rushing was indeed Rachael Renfroe's mother as is believed by some researchers. There was a Mary Rushing who was a member of Long Creek Baptist Church in Warren County, Georgia, as was Rachael Renfroe and several of Rachael and Enoch's sons and daughters.

It is believed by some Renfroe family researchers that Mary was the oldest child of Enoch and Rachel Renfroe. However, according to the order in which the children are named in Enoch's will, Joel was the oldest.

NOTE: According to the old English naming pattern, if John Renfro of the 1848 will was Enoch's father, the oldest son should have been named John. The second son should have been named for Rachael's father, but it is believed that his name was John also - John Rushing.

One Mary Hancock is listed as a member in the minutes of Long Creek Baptist Church in Warren County, Georgia. She joined by experience on June 26th, 1802 and applied for her letter of dismissal on 21st April 1810. I was unable to find any mention in the Mt. Nebo minutes of a date when Mary was received by letter, probably shortly after April 1810. The minutes of Mt. Nebo Baptist Church in Wilkinson County lists Mary Hancock as a deceased member, 28th May 1817.

It is my belief that all of these minutes refer to Mary Renfroe Hancock, wife of Clement Hancock, Sr., but I have not yet been able to document this information. However, the 1820 Wilkinson County census lists several of Clement and Mary's sons: Clemmont (Jr.); John; William; and Joseph. jrh

Children of C
LEMENT HANCOCK and MARY RENFROE are:
2. i.   JOSEPH2 HANCOCK, b. Bef. 1778, Prob. North Carolina; d. Abt. 1840, Wilkinson County, Georgia.
3. ii.   WILLIAM HANCOCK, b. June 1779, Wilkes County, North Carolina; d. June 1852, Crawford County, Georgia.
4. iii.   JOHN HANCOCK, b. 1787, Warren County, Georgia; d. May 18, 1862, Crawford Co., Georgia.
iv.   ENOCH HANCOCK, b. 1789, Prob. Warren County, Georgia.
  Notes for ENOCH HANCOCK:
I have done no research on Enoch Hancock other than the 1830 Crawford County, Georgia census which shows the following:
Males: 1, 5/10; 1, 40/50. Females: 1, 30/40

Perhaps Enoch had other children who were older and already away from home.

The 1840 Crawford County census reads:
Hancock, Enoch: 1 male 15/20; 1 male 40/50. 1 female 40/50.

Enoch must have been exactly 40 in 1830 and exactly 50 in 1840 or he couldn't be in the same age bracket on both censuses.

5. v.   CLEMENT HANCOCK, JR., b. Bet. 1790 - 1794, Prob. Warren County, Georgia; d. Bet. 1840 - 1842, Crawford County, Georgia.
6. vi.   MARY HANCOCK, b. Abt. 1800.
