  • Sergt. James Jones US Army about 1870 (92 KB)
    James JONES Civil War veteran 1864-65 who reenlisted 1868 and continued an army career ending in 1883-1897 as resident Sgt.in charge of Fort Popham at the mouth of the Kennebec River. His last two children Frank and Esther were born there. He retired to Bath,ME ; was active GAR member and city councilman where he died in 1917 at the age of 75.

Graduated 15th in class of 200 from Radio School Sioux Falls,S.D.fall 1943. Aerial Gunnery Scholl Yuma, AZ winter 1943. Air Crew Training in B-25 Mitchell Bombers spring 1944.Picked up new B-25 Mitchell Bomber in Savannah,GA May 1944 flew to Sacramento,CA for outfitting bomber for crossing to Honolulu,HA June 1944 with extra gas tanks that were removed in Honolulu before going on to Australia. Flew 55 combat missions (New Guinea thru the Phillipines). Returned to US in June 1945. Flew cover at the landings at Zamboanga, Mindanao and Cebu City, Cebu, PI.

    Ethan was a member of the Hyde Light Guards in Bath, ME and they mustered at Fort Powers, Augusta at the time of the Spanish American War. He served in Cuba.After the war he was reinstated in the Maine National Guard, Company C , Second Regiment as Sergeant on Jan. 27th 1900 under his old war commander now a Colonel, Everard Newcomb.

  • Jane Rees abt 1852 b. Llanedi,Carmathenshire,Wales (27 KB)
    Wife of immigrant John Jones from Llandyfrydog, Anglesea, No. Wales. Mother of John S., James, and Paul.Shortly after coming to Pittsburgh he married Jane Rees (also an immigrant from Llanedi, Carmathenshire, So.Wales) , eldest daughter of Widow Mary Rees. They had three sons John S., James, and Paul. In 1846 after his injury in the mines, he was idle for a year before moving to Bradys Bend Iron Works, Pa. then in the zenith of its fame. They moved there in the spring of '48. In 1852 his wife left him and went to her people in Pittsburgh; and he "Batched" with his boys (aged 14,10, and 5 years). She returned in the fall of the same year and they divided the household property and forever after separated.
