Notes for I
MMIGRANT WILLIAM NEVILLE:
William Neville was the first of his family to arrive in am erica. He Arrived in America in Nansemon County or Isle o f Wight County,Virginia. The Nevilles came to America from E ngland, but went to England in 1066 with William the Conque rer from Normany,France. The Neville family is an old nobl e family in England. Several Queens of England were from th e Neville family. Ann Neville ,wife of Richard 3Rd.,was on e of them. Her father , a powerful nobleman, was the Earl e of Warwick and known as the Kingmaker. In England today th ere are several nobles from the Neville family. The Nevill e family was from the north of England. Inform ation is from letter by John Davenport Neville, researcher , 11/16/1974.

According to Trimble in American Origins, William Nevill, w ho lived in Isle of Wight County , Virginia as early as Mar ch 1642/3, was probably the first of this family in America . He died before 1665, and his widow probably married Arthu r Skinner, since on April 25, 1665, his son Roger Nevill so ld his interest in William's land to his "father-in-law, Ar thur Skinner. On May 16, 1665, John Neville and his wife El izabeth of Nansemond County , Virginia sold Arthur Skinne r 125 acres granted to Nevill. Source: Isle of Wight Count y , Virginia deeds. Interpretation problem: I would assum e that by using the words "father-in-law" that Arthur Skinn er was not the Step-father (married to widow Nevill) of Rog er Nevill, but that Roger had married a daughter of Arthu r Skinner, thus Roger would sell his interest in the land t o his "father-in-law"...

On May 16, 1665, John Nevill and his wife Elizabeth of Nans emond County , Virginia sold Arthur Skinner 125 acres grant ed to Nevill. Source: Isle of Wight County , Virginia deeds . This would indicated that John and Roger were brothers (s ons of William Nevill) and both sold their interest in th e subject land within 21 days to Arthur Skinner.

From "Seventeenth Century Isle of Wight County, Virginia" b y John Bennett Boddie, pages 235 and 236, in part: Neville. ...."William Neville was first of his family in the country . In March 1642-43 the General Assembly enacted that the bo undaries of Isle of Wight "shall extend from the main rive r into the woods southerly into and including the plantatio ns of William Neville and Robert Pitt" In 1643 Captain Joh n Upton patented land next to him.

William Neville was dead before the 25th April 1665 for o n that date Roger Neville sold to Arthur Skinner, his fathe r-in-law, "all claims to the estate of William Neville my f ather".

John Bennett Boddie's Historical Southern Families, Vol. II , p. 149 and 150: "William Neville, first of his family i n Virginia..on borders of Isle of Wight and Nansemond. I n March 1642-43 the General Assembly enacted that the bound aries of Isle of Wight shall extend from the main river int o the woods southerly into and including the plantations o f William Neville and Robert Pitt...William Neville had tw o sons, Roger and JOHN Neville [actually, Boddie shows proo f only for Roger]...Roger seemingly moved to Nansemond...di sappears from Isle of Wight records from 1672 until 1704 wh en he was holding 200 acres of land in the Quit Rents of th at year...JOHN Neville [Roger's apparent brother] m. Elizab eth Reynolds...In 1665, JOHN Neville of Nansemond, planter , and Elizabeth, his wife, sold to John Marshall of Isle o f Wight for 1000 lbs. of tbco. 400 acres granted Mar. 6 t o Henry Bradley and Bradley sold to Neville Feb. 2, 1663 . Recorded in Nansemond, John Lear, Clerk. Recorded in Isl e of Wight, John Jennings, Clerk...
