L.D. (Lawrence DeCody) Bailey is listed in the Confederate Soldiers and Sailors Pension Roll Pickens County, Alabama as number 20375. L.D. a Pickens County resident enlisted on 6 March 1861, at Viannce, Alabama at the age of 24. He served the Confederate States in Company B, Lane Guards, 42nd Regiment, Alabama under the Commander: Captain Thomas C. Lanier. L.D. was wounded at the battle of Correnth(Corinth) in the State of Mississippi between the 3 and 4 of October 1862. A private L.D.'s enlistment was for 12 months, one year.
The Forty-Second Alabama Infantry participated in at least 37 engagements between 3 October 1862 - 26 April 1865; L.D. was wounded at the very first engagement. Like almost all Civil War units the Forty-Second Alabama Infantry was often known by an alternate designation derived from the name of its commanding officer. Therefore, the alternate name for the regiment that L.D. Bailey served with is Thomas C. Lanier's Infantry.
L.D. was grandfather to Mary Edna Bailey Marble, our grandmother. Grandmother Mary Bailey once said of her grandfather that he would spend a great deal of time reading from the Bible.

In the basement of Red Bank United Methodist Church for years has hung a framed sign with names of the church's World War II veterans. The name plate of Sgt. Joe N. Armstrong is in black, indicating he was killed in battle. The church seems to have much more knowledge of Sgt. Armstrong. He is remembered by a Sunday school class named after him.

Sgt. Armstrong Now Listed as Killed in Action
Sgt. Joe N. Armstong, son of Mr. and Mrs. G. j. Armstrong of 3510 Redding Road, Red Bank, was killed in action in a medium bomber mission over Germany on Dec. 23, 1944, the War Department notified his parents Thursday. He had been reported previously as missing on that date.
Sgt. Armstrong was a gunner on a B-26 Marauder bomber. It was shot down over Achen, Germany, during a mission over Neckarels, Germany.
The youth relinquished an alternate appointment by Representative Estes Kefauver to West Point in order to join the air forces as a private following graduation with high honors at Red Bank high School. He was faculty representative for the 1943 class exercises and was a member of the National Honor Society. He was also an instructor in weight-lifting at the Frye Institute.
Sgt. Armstrong held the Good Conduct Medal and the ETO Service Ribbon.
His grandmothers are Mrs. W. B. Williams of Knoxville and Mrs. J. N. Sadler of Chattanooga.

FINAL RITES WEDNESDAY
Mrs. J. N. Sadler, wife of the late J.N. Sadler of 106 E. Euclid St. died Monday in a local hospital. She was the widow of the Rev. J. N. Sadler and lost a grandson, Sgt. Joe N. Armstrong, in World War II. Mrs Sadler was a member of the St. Elmo Methodist Church and the Bates Sunday School Class for 27 years.
She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. T.W. Roberts, Lebanon, Ky.; Mrs. G. J. Armstrong, Mrs W.A. Cofer, both of Chattanooga; son, E. N. Sadler, Chattanooga; two grand-daughters, Mrs. Duane Marble, Ashland, Ohio; Miss Deidra Ann Sadler, Chattanooga; three grandsons, T.W. Roberts, Lebanon, Ky; Gary Sadler, Chattanooga, and the Rev. W.A. Cofer Jr., Sequatchie, Tenn.; four great-grandsons, two brothers, Hayden and Blant Turner, Red Boiling Springs, Tenn.
Funeral services will be held at 2 P.M. tomorrow at the St Elmo Methodist Church with the Rev. Paul Dodd officiating.
Interment will be in Chattanooga Memorial Park. The body is at National Funeral Home.

Mary Edna, the youngest daughter of Robert Bradshaw BAILEY, was affectionately nicknamed "Red" by her siblings for her bright red hair. She had a domineering personality, which required a lot of attention. Mary also displayed that Irish temper (or was it the red hair); she often spoke in very strong language when angered. Yet, Mary was a beautiful loving individual, whom two Marble men could not resist.
Mary went to college in Selma, Alabama to be a legal secretary. During her college years she went to Pine Hill and Yellow Bluff Campgrounds (Wilcox County, Alabama), where Sam Hood Ball had a cabin.

Mary had many affectionate nicknames from her 8 grandsons: Nanny, Granny, and Mustang Mary. She would arrive in her Ford Mustang and in a loud, long southern draw, she would say to her grandsons, "Give me some sugar, my darling".
