He served the Confederate States in Company B, Lane Guards, 42nd Regiment, Alabama under the Commander: Captain Thomas C. Lanier. L.D. was wounded at the battle of Correnth(Corinth) in the State of Mississippi between the 3 and 4 of October 1862. A private L.D.'s enlistment was for 12 months, one year. The Forty-Second Alabama Infantry participated in at least 37 engagements between 3 October 1862 - 26 April 1865; L.D. was wounded at the very first engagement. Like almost all Civil War units the Forty-Second Alabama Infantry was often known by an alternate designation derived from the name of its commanding officer.     Photo date before 1917. The Knapp Quarry was a copper mine worked & owned by the Knapps of German Origin. This stone quarry was eventually converted into a pond. Notes for JOSEPH NEWTON ARMSTRONG: Descendant of Sadler Methodist preachers: LOUISE FRANCES ADELINE7 SADLER (JASPER NEWTON6, CAELIE NEWTON5, JOHN WESLEY4, JOHN3, HENRY SADLEY2, JOHN1) In the basement of Red Bank United Methodist Church for years has hung a framed sign with names of the church's World War II veterans. The name plate of Sgt. Joe N. Armstrong is in black, indicating he was killed in battle. The church seems to have much more knowledge of Sgt. Armstrong. He is remembered by a Sunday school class named after him. Article from Chattanooga, Tennessee Newspaper in December 1944: Sgt. Armstrong Now Listed as Killed in Action Sgt. Joe N. Armstong, son of Mr. and Mrs. G. j. Armstrong of 3510 Redding Road, Red Bank, was killed in action in a medium bomber mission over Germany on Dec. 23, 1944, the War Department notified his parents Thursday. He had been reported previously as missing on that date. Sgt. Armstrong was a gunner on a B-26 Marauder bomber. It was shot down over Achen, Germany, during a mission over Neckarels, Germany. The youth relinquished an alternate appointment by Representative Estes Kefauver to West Point in order to join the air forces as a private following graduation with high honors at Red Bank high School. He was faculty representative for the 1943 class exercises and was a member of the National Honor Society. He was also an instructor in weight-lifting at the Frye Institute. Sgt. Armstrong held the Good Conduct Medal and the ETO Service Ribbon. His grandmothers are Mrs. W. B. Williams of Knoxville and Mrs. J. N. Sadler of Chattanooga. Mrs Sadler was a member of the St. Elmo Methodist Church and the Bates Sunday School Class for 27 years. She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. T.W. Roberts, Lebanon, Ky.; Mrs. G. J. Armstrong, Mrs W.A. Cofer, both of Chattanooga; son, E. N. Sadler, Chattanooga; two grand-daughters, Mrs. Duane Marble, Ashland, Ohio; Miss Deidra Ann Sadler, Chattanooga; three grandsons, T.W.
