The Never-Ending Search for My Ancestors!

Updated February 3, 2006

I am researching the names ALLCOCK, BEHRENS, BRUCH, HARPER/HARPUR, LEWIS, MORGAN, PAULISON, PUTNAM/PUTMAN, QUACKENBUSH, ROYCE, TERHUNE, WILKINSON, and ZABRISKIE; and those that branch away, such as: BIGELOW, BRADFORD, CARPENTER, CHURCHILL, FITCH, GOODNOW, HALE, HEMENWAY, HINCKLEY, HOPPER, HYDE, PRUYN, and SALMON, among others.
I have a tree with a direct link to William BRADFORD, Governor of Plymouth Plantations and a passenger on the Mayflower. This was prepared by my great-aunt, Lucy Sophia ROYCE, many years ago. Unfortunately, she had lots of records and books that have disappeared since her death. But on this tree are the names of Asa Goodnow Hemenway/Lucy Hinckley Churchill/John Churchill/Olive Experience Hale/Elisha Hale/Lucy Hinckley/Ira Hinckley/Elizabeth Hyde(Hide)/David Hyde(Hyde)/Althea Bradford/Anna Fitch/Joseph Bradford/Mary Fitch/William Bradford Jr., etc.

Aunt Lucy's information on the ROYCE family traced them back to Robert ROYCE and Mary SIMS. I am trying to locate records for the people who married into the ROYCE family; for instance, the wife of Deodatus ROYCE--Emily BEMENT, the wife of Asahel ROYCE--Sally Betsy CLARK. Those are just for starters.

Out on another limb are the PUTNAMS, who started out as PUTMANS--Glen PUTMAN/PUTNAM and Letitia PAULISON. Glen was born in Amsterdam, New York, according to his son's death certificate (Glen[n] Howard PUTNAM), and Letitia in Hackensack, NJ. Glenn Howard PUTNAM married Mary Amelia LEWIS. Their children were: Helen (m. Harold Crips), Elise (m. Bayard BEACH), Glenn Howard Jr. (died young), Margaret (m. 1-Harry RICK; m. 2-Harry THARP), and Karl Sobieski PUTNAM (m. Mabel HEMENWAY ROYCE) (my grandparents).

Mary A. LEWIS was the daughter of Gideon Noble LEWIS and Margaret ALLCOCK from Ashtabula, Ohio.

As for the HARPERS, MORGANS, BEHRENS, and BRUCHS, I know the following:

My grandfather, Thomas HARPER (b. May 8, 1871, Monmouth, Wales) went to Jerseyville, IL to live with Alfred MORGAN, brother of his mother, Elizabeth MORGAN. His father, Thomas HARPER, married Elizabeth MORGAN (b. 1842, Llantrissent, Pontypool, Monmouth, Wales, daughter of George and Elizabeth MORGAN) Nov. 23, 1862 in St. Paul's Church, Newport, Monmouth, Wales. I just discovered my grandfather had 19 siblings! (This will, of course, mean the demise of yet another real tree!)

Thomas HARPER married Otillia BEHRENS (b. 3/18/1875 in Alton, IL) on 9/9/1895 in St. Louis, MO. I do wish I had gotten an earlier start, or that my ancestors would have thought ahead! Otillia was the daughter of Charles H. BEHRENS (b. approx. 1841 in Germany) and Theresa BRUCH (b. 1852 in Alton, IL to Otillia WALTER, daughter of Theresa Seitel, according to letters). Otillia first married Ignatz (Ignatius) BRUCH, a stonemason born 31 Jan 1822 in Oberschopfheim, Baden, Germany. He died 14 Jul 1860 in Alton, Illinois. She then married Peter GUERTLER prior to 1864 when their son Peter GUERTLER was born.
Charles BEHRENS emigrated to the U.S. from Germany in 1858 (according to the 1920 census). Theresa and Charles had three children, Otillia, Charles and Theresa. Both Theresa and her infant, also named Theresa, died during childbirth on March 18, 1880, and are buried in Elk City, Kansas. Charles Jr. disappeared out west (the last letter from him was dated 2/22/05 and was from Ogden, Utah), and Otillia married Thomas and had a bunch of kids, one of whom was my father! Theresa's half-brother, Peter GUERTLER married Katherine HUND. Their children: Walter and Tillie Ann. Walter married Kathleen MCCARTY and Tillie married Claire MAKER.

So, that's about it. I would appreciate any information anyone has on any of these family members, and I am willing to share anything that I have.
