  • Julia A. Captain (61 KB)
    The daughter of Augustus and Jane Captain, Julia was born November 7, 1855, baptized November 25, 1855 by Father Ponziglione, and died May 22, 1877. She married Cyrus Francis Ririe on May 15, 1876. Julia died three months after the birth of their only son and was the first burial in the Captain Cemetery.

    Rosa pictured with her daughter, Agnes, and son Leo. Rosa was born November 20, 1868, daughter of Augustus and Jane Captain, and died April 24, 1938. She married Alfred Worth Hoots on February 11, 1886. Agnes was born August 27, 1895 and died March 11, 1936. Agnes married Waldo Freeman on February 24, 1917. Leo died in his first year of birth.

    Augustine Captain was born Aug. 13, 1854 and died Mar. 4, 1892. She is the daughter of Joseph Captain, Jr and Susan Lambert. She married Francis Trumbly July 17, 1873 at Osage Mission, KS. He was born Dec. 12, 1848 and died 1882.

  • Susanna J. Captain (30 KB)
    Born June 2, 1849, baptized June 17, 1849,died August 12, 1902. Daughter of Augustus and Jane Captain. Susanna had four children with her first husband, Cyprian Tayrien, six children with her second husband, Shadrach Marion Whiles, and one child with Riley Sweeney. Her fourth marriage was to Charles Jennings.

    Rosalie, sister to Augustus Captain and wife of Edward Chouteau, was the only female to serve as an Osage chief. Known as Mother Chouteau, she served as chief of the Beaver Band of Osages.

    Letter dated July 1, 1886 from Isabella Captain Sloan to an attorney in Ohio concerning a $2 inheritance from the mother of her first husband, George Newman.
  • Aunt Jane Appleby (25 KB)
    America Jane Moore was born February 11, 1825, probably in Ohio, and died November 11, 1917. She was married to Peter Augustus "Ogeese" Captain until his death in 1877. She later married Luther Appleby and became known as Aunt Jane Appleby, the Cattle Queen of Oklahoma.

    Located west of Skiatook, Osage Co., OK. The sign left of the gate reads "As you are, I was. As I am, you will be."

    Isabella closes by mentioning their health and the crops. She was 8 months pregnant with a set of twins at the time she wrote this letter. Her husband, Dan Sloan, died 6 months later and both twins died before they reached 10 months old. Isabella later married Green Yeargain.

    Born September 18, 1911, and died March 29, 2005. He is pictured here with his six children during his 90th birthday celebration.
  • Green Jeremiah Yeargain (16 KB)
    Born June 3, 1856 and died February 9, 1949. He married Isabella Captain in 1887 at Pawhuska, I.T., and married Nora Ogden in 1897 after Isabella's death. Green was a pony express rider when the Tulsa post office was first opened.

    Born May 19, 1907, died September 1, 1986. Married Dennis Ervin Myers on December 26, 1926.

  • Marriage Record - G. H. Newman & Isabella Captain (15 KB)
    December 17, 1874 marriage record in Osage Mission, Kansas for G. H. [George] Newman and Isabella Captain certified by John Shoemaker. The certificate is recorded in a family bible that was owned by Jane Captain Appleby and is housed at the Skiatook Museum.

    Martha Payne was born Oct. 27, 1883 and died Oct. 27, 1961. She first married Sam S. Moore and later married George Henry Newman, Jr.
  • Peter "Whack" Captain and friend, Ethel Stamper (47 KB)
    Peter "Whack" Captain was born Apr. 17, 1860 and died Apr. 28, 1938. He was the only son of Augustus and Jane Captain. Peter suffered from typhoid fever around the age of 5 which left him mentally impaired. The final division of Whack's sizable estate was evenutally settled by the Oklahoma Supreme Court in 1941.

    Verlie Mae Moore was born Nov. 4, 1909 and died Mar. 2, 1977. She married Earl Wesley Park on Nov. 17, 1932. Photo taken about 1920 on the banks of Hominy creek.

    John Park III (my 5th great-grandfather), was born and died in Hampshire County, West Virginia. John was married to Susanna Elrod.

    Daughter of Martha Ann Payne and Sam S. Moore. Ella had one sister, Verlie Mae, and two brothers, Sterling and Howard Doyle.
  • Augustus "Ogeese" Captain (63 KB)
    Born about 1815 and died August 8, 1877. Augustus married America Jane Moore around 1840. A. T. Dickerman, who once met Ogeese, described him as being "a giant in stature, being fully six feet six inches tall, with monstrous long arms, great big hands, and although he had no extra flesh he weighed 250 pounds."

    Howard was the son of Martha Ann Payne and Sam S. Moore. Howard had one brother, Sterling, and two sisters, Ellie and Verlie Mae. Photo taken about 1919.
  • Black Gold - New Orleans, LA January 8, 1923 (259 KB)
    Owner and breeder: Rosa M. Hoots. In 1924 Churchill Downs added the derby's first prep race in celebration of the 50th running of the Kentucky Derby. Black Gold won the Trial and came back four days later to win the Derby. Black Gold claimed a $50,000 prize as well as the first 14k gold trophy to be presented to a Kentucky Derby winner (the trophy was later stolen). It would be another 24 years before a Derby Trial winner would also win the Derby. Due to her Osage heritage, Matt Winn, the Derby's vice-president and general manager, referred to Rosa as a "simple aboriginal woman." Black Gold ran his last race on January 18, 1928 when he finished the Salome Purse with a broken leg. He was buried the next day at the Fair Grounds infield in New Orleans. Black Gold was inducted into the National Thoroughbred Racing Hall of Fame in 1989.
