da Rosa SEMIÃO Family HistoryUSA: Our grandfather, Manoel Rosa, started a new chapter by immigrating to the USA from Faial, Azores, about 1887. That single event has resulted in the proliferation of Roses in New England. Others in our immediate family are spread out from California to Georgia. Born in 1873 as "Manoel da Rosa SEMIÃO" he came to the USA illegally at age 14 and worked on a RI farm in East Providence which he eventually bought. Manuel Rose married Mary Fraser (FRAGA/SILVA), fathered nine children between 1897-1914 : Charles, William Francis, Mary P., George, Alfred Francis, Jack (Manuel/John), Lena, Frank, and Celia. After his 1st wife Mary died in 1931, he remarried Maria Pinheiro Freitas. About 1953 he sold the farm, went back to Ribeirinha, Faial and died there in August 1955. I have developed a 95% complete tree of his descendants here in the USA, to the sixth generation and growing.

Of particular interest is the relatively rare surname SEMIÃO. I have traced this surname back to the 1700s in the village of Ribeirinha, Faial (northeast tip of this island across the straights from Pico). The origin turned out to be on Semiao da Rosa son of Joseph de LEMOS and his wife Maria das Candeias.

Portugal: 0700-1400: I am proud to share in the rich heritage of famous men like Henry the Navigator. It was through his luck and energy that the Azores were discovered in 1429. There is a lot of wonderful history and geealogical information found in Dr James H. Guill's book, "The Azores" available from GSI in Tulare, CA (currently out of print.
