Nov. 1977, Vol. 4 No. 2, p.48..."The origin of Fayette County-Saltlick Township's pioneer settlers came from eastern Pennsylvania and Maryland, starting just before the Revolution. Among them were Abraham Dumbauld, Christian Perkey (who built the first mill along Indian Creek about 1780), Peter and Geroge Bucher, Benjamin Davis (early tavernkeeper), John Martin, George Poe, ADAM BUNGARD, Shadrach Davis, CHARLES WORRICK, John Robinson, and the Schlater Family. The name is from licks of salt along Indian Creek. The township was created in 1797 from Bullskin."

ESTATE OF ADAM BUNGARD - Saltlick Township, Fayette Co., PA
FAYETTE COUNTY
      The commonwealth of Pennsylvania to the Sheriff of the County of Fayette, GREETING:
      Whereas at an orphan's court held at Union Town in and for the County of Fayette on the first Monday of September A.D. 1840, before the Hon. N. Ewing, Esq., President. This associates Judges of the Same Court, DANIEL BUNGARD, one of the sons and heirs at Law of ADAM BUNGARD, late of said county, dec'd. presented his petition to the said court, noting that his father died intestate about the 5th day of October 1839 leaving a widow, Magdalena and ten children, viz: Adam, George, John, Christopher(sic), the petitioner, Jacob & Michael, daughters, Catharin intermarried with Jacob Miller, Susanna intermarried with Samuel Berg, Rachel unmarried. That the said intestate died seized in his demesne(sic) as of fee of and in a certain messuage tract of land situate in Saltlick Township, containing 200 acres more or less, adjoining lands of Ludwick Miller, William Seneff, Abm. Gallentine, Abm. Davis and others. And therefore praying the court to award an inquest to make partition or valuation of the premises according to law. We therefore command you that taking with you twelve free, honest and lawful men of your baliwick, you go to and upon the premises aforesaid, and thereby their oath or solemn affirmation, that you make partition thereof to and among the widow and children of the said intestate in such manner and if such partition cannot be made without prejudice to and spoiling of the whole, but if such partition cannot be made thereoof as aforesaid that then you value and appraise the same according to law. And further that you cause the said Inquest to inquire and ascertain whether the appertenances will conveniently accomodate more than one of the children of the said intestate, and if so, how many of the said children it will conveniently accomodate. That due notice of the time of making such partition or valuation be given to all the parties interested and that you make return of your proceedings herein to the next general orphan's court.
Witness the Hon. Nathaniel Ewing by President of our said court at Union Town the 20th day of January A.D. 1841.

FAYETTE COUNTY, SS:
      Before me the Subscriber one of the Commonwealth's Justices of the Peace in and for said County, personally appeared DANIEL BUNGARD who after being duly affirmed according to law deposeth and saith that in the matter of the estate of ADAM BUNGARD, dec'd. an inquest having been held on this real estate of Decendent that this deponent verily believed that this valuation is two
(sic) low and that undue influence was used--that the land is worth at least five Dollars per acre--that there is seventy acres cleared, a cabin house and a good log barn, also a good orchard on the premises.

      To Their Honors the Judges of the Orphans Court of the County of Fayette I George Measond Sheriff of said County to the unit hereto annexed do return-- That in obedience then to, taking with me William Kern, Jr., Joseph Brooks, Samuel Pritts, Frederick Miller, Gabriel Christner, Peter Eicher, James Worrick, John Rapler, Daniel Maeteen, Solomon Kern, Peter Fike and Peter Shaeffer, active free, honest and lawful men of my baliwick I did on the 15th day of February A.D. 1841 to go and upon the message, plantation and tract of land in the said unit described late the estate of Adam Bungard deceased and, did then and there by oaths and Solemn affirmations of the said Active men find that the said land will not commonly accommodate more than one of the children and heirs of the said Intestate, and that partition thereof, can not be made without pregudia to and spoiling the whole and them of, did Value and appraise the same at the sum of Six hundred & fifty three Dollars and ninety three cents. And that of the time of making said valuation I did personally give due notice according to law to all parties interested.

      Situate in Saltlickk Township in the County of Fayette and Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The property of the heirs of Adam Bungard, deceased, and surveyed by me on the 25th and 26th days of February A.D. 1841 at the request of Sheriff Meason, and computed by me to contain 261 acres, 2 rods, and 12 perches strick measure            John P.       Exception of DANIEL BUNGARD, one of the heirs of ADAM BUNGARD, dec'd. to the account of Adam Bungard and John Christner, Administors of the Estate of said decedant--
1. We except to the Credits, to Jacob, Rachel and Michael Bungard numbered in said account ten, Eleven and Twelve, as contrary to law, negligent and fraudulent on the part of the administrators. The facts are--to wit: At the sale of the personal property of the said decedent--the said Jacob, Rachel and Michael, made purchases for which they respectively gave their obligations to the administrators--After the notes become due the administrators commenced suits against the said Jacob, Rachel & Michael before Esqr. J. H. Miller, on the trial of the said Debts set up claims against the estate for services performed afther they were of age, and during the life time of their father--on this claim, the said Jacob was allowed a credit of Seven Dollars sixty eight cts., and the said Michael Ninety Nine Dollars and two cts. Without having proven a contract between them and their father by which only they would be entitled. The said administrators as we think, did not ask or employ council, or use any industry to present the said credits on the trial before the Justices, witnesses being present for the purpose of disproving said claimed, without an examination being demanded on the part of the administrators. Thus suffering the interests of the Estate to go unrepresented--And the administrators we think having appealed from the decision thus obtained before Esqr. J. H. Miller.
2nd. We except to the Item of three Dollars in the Account No. 14 in which John Christner, one of the administrators has received a credit for three days coming to Union Town for council, No council appearing to have been enployed to act on behalf of the adminstrators, in consequence of which, the estate had suffered a loss.
3rd. We except--to an item of Two Dollars in the Account No. 15, in which Adam Bungard, on the Adm. has rec'd a credit for coming to Union Town for councill--this exception is founded on the same reason as exception No. 2.

To Their Honors the Judges of the Orphans Court of Fayette County.
The Subscriber appointed auditor upon the adm'n account of Adam Bungard and John Christner, admins. of Adam Bungard, late of Saltlick Township, decd. Repectfulley reports that having heard the parties--who came before him--their councel, proofs, & allegations at a time & place of which one previous notice was given (the swearing or affirmation of the auditor being waived) He reports that said account without alteration, as states by the Register--and is of opinion that Daniel Bungard, the Exceptor, pay the costs of the audit.

And now, March 29th 1841, on motion of Daniel Bungard & his affidavit filed, the Court grant a rule to show cause why the Inquisition should not be set aside; copy issd. June 9th 1841. On motion rule discharged & rule when all heirs & representatives of said deceased to come to court on the fourth Monday of September, next to choose or refuse the real estate aforesaid at the valuation sd. copy issd.

March 7, 1842, the heirs of Said Adam Bungard, decd. being severally called in open court make default, excepting Jacob & Michael Bungard, who elect to tkae the property described in the unit of partition above mentioned and, they offer to the court Peter Fike as their surety, who is approved by the Court and thereupon Michael Bungard, Jacob bungard & Peter Fike each acknowledged to owe the commonwealth of Pennsylvania the sum of Thirteen hundred dollars, to be levied of their respective goods, and chattels, lands & tenements, upon condition that the said Michael & Jacob shall & do within twelve months from this time pay or cause to be paid unto the widow & other children & representatives of the said Adam Bungard, dec'd their several shares & purport, of & in the valuation of the real estate as above taken by them at the appraisement, with interest from this time, then the above reconveyance to be void otherwise valid & thereupon the court ____ that the said Michael & Jacob
shall & may hold & enjoy the said real estate to them, their heirs & assigns forever as fully & freely as their said father had & held the same in his life time, a ___ to act of assembly in such case no de___ provided.

March 14th 1845 Receipts of Danl. Bungard & Jacob Miller, Christian Bungard, and Saml. & Rachel HAUN filed for $116.80 each in full of their purparts of the above described real estate. (so we now know Rachel Bungard married between September 1840 and March 1845.)
June 1, 1846 Recd of Jacob Bungard and filed for $49.64 in full of his share of real estate.
Sept. 11th 1849 Jacob Bungard filed the recpt. of Adam Bungard for $53.86 partof the proceeds of his share.
June 4, 1848 Jacob Bungard files on acct. of Saml. & Susan Berg (late Bungard) for $53.36 in full of her share in the above.
