Stotzer and Snader Family: Switzerland and USA

This page presents the results of our research, since 1997, into:
* The Swiss Stotzer and Stotser family from Büren an der Aare, Switzerland to various locations in the USA.
* The Swiss or German Snader (earlier Schnader) family from the "Palatine" area of the Swiss-German border to mainly Lancaster County, Pennsylvania in the USA.
In some cases the family data begins as far back as the 1500s in Europe. Other significant surnames in this combined family tree are: Reust, Gribi, Kocher, Stotser, Schneder, Ehlert, Eucker, Case, Moore, and Cayse.
We are, of course, willing to share or match family information with other interested parties. We also welcome additional data, especially from Europe, on any of the above families.

Gottlieb Stotzer was born in Büren an der Aare, canton Bern, Switzerland in 1878. He married Frieda Reust in 1908 in Cleveland, Ohio and had three sons: Arthur, Frederick, and Harold (my father). He died in Cleveland in August, 1912 of "consumption" (tuberculosis). These pages are dedicated to both Gottlieb and Harold.
- Passenger Ship: L 'Aquitaine (1898) (42 KB)
This is the French Line passenger ship that carried Gottlieb Stotzer to the USA. The ship departed Le Harve, France on April 25, 1903 and arrived at Ellis Island on May 4, 1903. This photo of the ship in earlier times was taken at Port Said, Egypt, 26 June - 11 July 1898, while the ship was serving with Rear Admiral Manuel de la Camara's squadron, which had been sent to relieve the Philippines.
This ship was the former Hamburg-Amerika Line Normannia, purchased by Spain for war service in 1898. After the Spanish- American War, she became the French Line's L'Aquitaine and was scrapped in 1906.

Stotzer Hardware Store (started as a harness shop in the mid 1800s) probably taken in the 1950s. Sadly, the store closed after 150 years on December 31, 2006.

Frederick Reust, Mary Resser Reust and family sometime after 1890 in the Cleveland, Ohio area. Frederick and Mary emigrated from Switzerland in 1882. One of the children in this photo is Frieda Reust-future wife of Gottlieb Stotzer!
