| I am researching my family tree and that of my husband. My mother was born and raised in Elderbank, Nova Scotia and some of the surnames I have come across are BAKER, COLE, GRANT, MacDONALD, MOSHER and WILKS. My maternal grandmother was a WILKS. Her great-great grandfather, Donald GRANT, came to Pictou, Nova Scotia aboard the Hector with his wife Catherine and their five children (two boys and three girls). Her grandfather, Thomas WILKS (Gotobed), arrived in Nova Scotia, Canada aboard the Hosa on August 21, 1832. He lived in London, England as a young boy & later attended school in Ely, Cambridgeshire, England before emigrating. His last name may actually have been GOTOBED. Family rumour speaks of a falling-out with his parents which was never patched up. He never spoke of either parent but did write to a sister in Ely. Another sister, Rebecca, married Hugh McMullen and eventually went to live in Truro, Nova Scotia. Thomas was the first teacher in Little River, Nova Scotia. Little River was changed to Elderbank in 1912. My maternal grandfather was a MORASH from the Peggy's Cove branch of Morash's who, in turn, are from West Dover and Lunenburg. Names on his side I am researching include MORASH (of course) GREENOUGH and HILTZ. We know they originally came from Kleinheubach, Germany to Lunenburg, Nova Scotia in 1751 aboard the Murdoch. On the Sutherland side I have very little information. My grandfather was born in Glasgow, Scotland and emigrated to Canada in the early 1920's. My father was born and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Surnames on the Sutherland side I am researching include CRAIG, MacCONNELL, STUART and SUTHERLAND. It would appear that Lairg in Sutherlandshire is the origin of my Sutherland roots but there is also a Glasgow connection in there somewhere. Names on my husband's side we are researching include JODREY/JOUDREY (originally from Lunenburg, Nova Scotia), WREN (Lindsay Lake, Nova Scotia), SPEARS and HARTLING (Spanish Ship Bay, Nova Scotia). I have tried to be as accurate as possible but there may be errors. I have not confirmed all of the information in this tree so if anyone has any connections or corrections please email me. My information has been gathered from IGI records, cenus records, birth, death and marriage records from the National Archives and from other researchers and their trees. |
