She was born April 1857 in New York, and died 10 May 1943 in
Buffalo, Erie County, New York.  Burial:  Holy Cross Cemetery,
Lackawanna, NY.

March 2000: Per an email from Linda Hellems-Trinkle
"A man in New York looked up information for me at Forest Lawn
Cemetery in Buffalo, Erie County, New York and found a James Hellems
who died in 1892. He is the note he sent me: "I looked up the name of
 Hellems in Forest Lawn while I was working this morning. There are
two Hellems buried in Forest Lawn and not a whole lot of information
on them. Both are buried in a section that has lots for only one
person. I think it was for people who were poor or had no family.
I'll give you the information just as I have it, but I think it
will bring up more questions rather than answers. First is a James
Hellems who died July 8, 1892, age 36, section 39, lot 1776. His
last adress was 233 Myrtle Street, Buffalo, New York. That really
is all there is on him. I could check the address in a city
directory if you think it would help. Number 2 is: Maud Hellems
who died July 22, 1891, cause of death "still-born". Last address
was 534 Swan Street. Now the kicker, under parents names it just
says James. Myrtle Street I believe runs off of Swan or at least
is very close to it. I hate to do this to you, but like I said,
it brings up more questions. But that is what I found. Let me
know if you think any of these people are your family."

April 2000: Per email of April 13, 2000 from Linda Hellems-Trinkle
"Received death certificate of James Hellems buried in Forest Lawn.
It didn't list parents, spouse, or birthdate. "... Age 40 (scratched out)
 About 36 years. White male, married. Birthplace (looks like America).
How long a resident of Buffalo: a number of years. Place of death:
no 32 or 92 Porter Stl. at Standard Radiator Works. I certify....
that Jse died on the 8th day of July, 1892 about 10:15 AM....cause
of death shock caused by scalding and burning ( radiator exploded,
burning him over most of his body). Signed this 12 day of July 1892
by Harry B. Rauman MD. Place of burial: Forest Lawn; date of burial
July 10..." It does match what I had been told by my father and
grandfather about how James died at work."

"...I have been printing your notes and sending them to my sister
Carol, she does not have a computer at this time so we still
use the US postal service and phone.  I have some news for
you or at least I hope it is news......I found Anna Maria
Hellems death site.  Holy Cross Cemetery in Lackawana,
died May 10, 1943 in Buffalo NY of cardiac dialation.
age 84 y 1m 9d.. buried from St Thomas Aquinas church
on May 15, 1943 Section A lot # w- 1/2- 35.  I ran out
of time but next week I will check on who she is buried
with.  I thougtI read from you that you had not been able
to locate the information and I just happened to find it
last night.  I have Lillian Shay's death info also if
you want it. I found it on the microfilm of Holy Cross
Cemetery...Donna"

Mary L. Hellems.  It has her date of birth as November 7, 1886
and death date as February 11, 1966. Parents are listed as 
Jacob Hellems and Anna Barrett. A letter that came also 
states this is the only document available on this person.

 Ella Gertrude Hellems became a nun. Her new name became
Sister Mary Lucretia. That is why her death is recorded as
Mary L. Hellems with Social Security.

 In the baptismal record from St. Brigid's Church,
Buffalo, she is given the name Helen Gertrude at the time
of her baptismal.

James was survived by his wife, Agnes; son, James Arthur Jr; and daughters,
Gertrude and Mrs. Thomas Dray. He is also survived by his mother, Anna
Hellems; brothers, William and Frank; and sisters Mrs. William Shea,
Mrs. Alice Green, and nuns, Sister M. Lucretia and Sister M. Yolanda
of the Order of St Francis.

Because James served in the US Navy during the Spanish American War, his
wife Agnes and daughter, Gertrude were able to collect a $36. a month pension
from the Navy.
