| Mr William B. Walton was my great grandfather and what I know of him comes mostly from records left by him,and my grandfather Joseph E Walton. The following is a personal account from the diary of Joseph Ezra Walton of his father William Blakesley Walton: William first courted and was engaged to a Ruthy Butler, she died and then he courted her sister Sarah Jane Butler and they married June,19,1851 in Edgerton old Church, Worchester England. William and Sarah had two children in England (Elinor and Caroline). They left England for America on May 8, 1856. They arrived in Boston Ma on the steam ship Canada May 22, 1856. They first visited Sarah's parents, William and Jane Butler of Haverhill, Ma. then came to Madision, Wi. There is a personal diary of the crossing accounted by William during the days on the boat and this details the boat interior, the passengers, the food eaten, and is a good example of early travel on the steam ships. It is too long for accounting here but a visit to my homepage below will let you read this diary. William wrote other diaries throughout his life which are currently (01/01/1997) in safekeeping by Sandy Walton Adams. There are several books in quite excellent condition. The following textual account of early pioneer life of William was copied from The History of Crawford and Richland Counties of Wisconsin, published April 1884: William B. Walton was born in Birmingham England in 1826. In 1856, he emigrated to the United States coming directly to Madison Wis., being employed there by P. McCabe, city surveyor on the city survey. He was afterward employed by D W Jones, secretary of State, in the platting of the state school lands. Mr Walton was married in Worchester England June 19, 1851, to Sarah J. daughter of William and Jane Butler, who came to this country in 1854 and made a home in Haverhill Ma., where Mrs Butler still resides. Mr. and Mrs. Walton have had seven children, six of whom are living: Eleanor Jane, Caroline, Louisa, William F., Maria E.. Francis E., Alice E., and Joseph E Walton. William F was accidently drowned in the Wisconsin river, while bathing June 18, 1882. In the Fall of 1859, Mr Walton came from Madison, to Scott town, Crawford county, purchasing 160 acres of school land on section 5, which he has improved, and upon which he now resides. Coming into the town the year that gave organization to Scott as it now is, Mr Walton has watched the growth and progress of the town with a great deal of interest, and has had no small part in the labor of this work. He was commissioned by Gov. Bashford, notary public, and is at present court commissioner and town clerk. He also has held the offices of county surveyor and deputy clerk of court. William and his wife Sarah Jane are buried at Mount Zion cemetry in Crawford county, Town of Scott along with many other Walton family members. The purpose of this home page is to have a resource for other family members so they can learn more about the Walton family members. The family tree may be requested if needed but has been removed from this web site to be updated. This page and its text will be updated in this calender year 2006 |
