| I am searching for the parents of my third-great-grandfather William Cooper. He was born about 1822 in MA or CT.The oldest record that I have found is his marriage to Martha Ann Barney, 6 May 1846, in Liberty [renamed Lynn], Greenup Co KY. William and Martha Ann had three children, all sons.Their firstborn son was Adoniram [my great-great-grandfather], who was born 9 Jun 1846, in Greenup Co KY; married Martha Messer, 18 Jan 1870, Portsmouth, Scioto Co OH; and died 12 Oct 1875, Greenup Co KY.The second son was Artemas, who was born 25 Jul 1847, in Greenup Co KY; married Sarah Susanna Rake, 3 Mar 1873, Greenup Co KY; and died 21 Apr 1908, in Marietta, Washington Co OH, though his residence was in Duncan, Jackson Co WV.The third son was Valentine, who was born in 1849 and died in 1852, in Greenup Co KY. This death record is the last mention I have found on Martha Ann Barney. I am searching for her date of death and place of burial.William Cooper's occupation in 1850, Greenup Co KY, was "tobacconist". A study of tobacco manufacturing in the Connecticut River Valley could lead to his origins in New England. The Springfield, MA area and the Suffield/Hartford, CT area were major centers for cigar-making and other products of tobacco manufacturing.Military Service: William Cooper served in Co.E, 22nd Reg., KY Vol. Inf. [Union]. He was wounded in the Battle of Chickasaw Bluffs, Mississippi, 29 Dec 1862. After his discharge in 1865, he returned to the Greenup/Lewis Co KY area. In about 1882, he went to live with his son Artemas, in Jackson Co WV.I am researching the following surnames: Cooper, Barney, Douglas, Callahan, Messer, Henderson, Freeland and Miller.Here is a list of men who were associated with William Cooper in some way:Captain John Boyle and Alfred M. Thompson, witnesses to W.C.'s pension application;John W. Woodworth, James Thayer, Lafayette Spriggs, and Captain Alexander Bruce: provided affidavits for said pension;John McKee,Sr., John McKee, Jr. and John Crossett: neighbors of W.C., on Smith Branch, Greenup Co KY.Please contact me with any ideas or information you may have which will lead to the discovery of William Cooper's parents and birthplace.
