Descendants of Thomas Eubanks

Generation No. 1

1. THOMAS1 EUBANKS was born 1776 in prob. Jones County, North Carolina, and died December 01, 1818 in Hancock County, Georgia. He married NANCY DICKSON Abt. 1803, daughter of THOMAS DICKSON and PRISCILLA. She was born Abt. 1783 in Hancock County, Georgia, and died Abt. 1862 in Sandy Point, Georgia, Crawford County.

Notes for T
HOMAS EUBANKS:
Some information on Thomas Eubanks comes from Judi Hamm from the FTM Eubanks Family GenForum Page on the internet and from a message posted on the Eubanks Family GENFORUM by Harvey Eubanks of Provo, Utah on Feb. 7, 1998.

Thomas Eubanks's ancestor, Thomas, may have come to Talbot County, Maryland from England in 1715 and moved south (probably into Virginia.) A grandson, Thomas, moved to North Carolina and died there in 1776. (Records in Will Book A, p. 196, July 1776, Jones County, NC. This Thomas married Rachel //?// and died at age 46. He had sons John, Elijah and George.) NOTE: According to Roger T. Eubank a Eubank/s researcher who lives in Singapore, this Thomas was married to Rachel Jones and was born in 1705, died in 1776 at the age of 71.

The above Thomas Eubanks is mentioned in the book RECORDS OF JONES COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA, 1779-1868, by Zae Hargett Gwynn, 1963, pg. 113:
"Aug. 4, 1783. John Eubanks, farmer, to Joseph Dew, farmer, for 5 pds. gold and silver specie, a tract of land in Jones Co. containing 200 acres being same land Elijah and George Eubanks gave deed for to said Joseph Dew, on S. side of Trent River adjoining land of Wilks, Jarman, Rosco Lipsey, Thomas Evans. John Eubanks is eldest brother of Elijah and George Eubanks and heirs at law of their father, Thomas Eubanks, deceased, and since John Dew is concerned as to clear title to land, this deed is given to clear same. Wts: John Simmons, James Lipsey."

I have not been able to find a documented connection between the above Eubanks family and the family of Thomas Eubanks of Hancock County, Georgia but it seems likely that he would be the son of one of the above mentioned sons of the Jones County, North Carolina Thomas Eubanks. Perhaps the Elijah Eubanks, who died in Hancock County in 1819, was the son of the Thomas Eubanks of Jones County, NC. and the brother of "my" Hancock County, GA Thomas.

Thomas Eubanks of Hancock County probably had a brother, John Eubanks, who married Susannah Moore, 1813, and lived in Hancock County where he died in 1833. This John may be the son mentioned in the Jones County, NC deed.

There are records in Hancock County, Will Book J, concerning the appraisement and sale of the personal property of an Elijah Eubanks who died sometime before 10 December 1819 at which time an appraisement was signed by Joel Pound, Joseph Garrett and Henry Ezell. Evidently Elijah's wife survived him. Mrs. Eubanks was one of the primary buyers of household items at the sale of Elijah's personal property. Another buyer was John Eubanks who was also appointed administrator of the estate. The relationship of John Eubanks, Elijah Eubanks and Thomas Eubanks of Hancock County is not certain, however they seem to be contemporaries so could possibly be brothers.

Jan. 29, 1999: Research at the Washington Library Genealogy room today, netted information on Thomas Eubanks. In Hancock County, Georgia Will Books J and K (on filmstrip) are the records of the appraisal and sale of the property of Thomas Eubanks. Will Book J, pages 275-279 contain the appraisal and sale of Thomas's property. Will Book K, pages 119 and 144 contain reports to the administrator, Lemuel Smith, of disbursements made from the estate.

The date of the appraisal was 9th day of July 1819 and the appraisers were Burwell Rachels, James Carter and John Chuly (or Cheely). Isaac Birdsong was the Justice of Peace before whom the appraisers certified the accuracy of the appraisal.

The most dominant name listed in the Account of Sales of the personal estate of Thomas Eubanks, deceased, is that of Nancy Eubanks, his widow. Nancy had to buy household and farming items and livestock that should have been willed to her had Thomas had the foresight to write a will. The date of the sale was 8th January 1821.

In Will Book K, pages 119 and 144, the reports to Lemuel Smith, the administrator, are dated 4th March 1822, 3rd March 1823 and 5th July 1824.

A few items of interest on p. 119 of Will Book K:
Jan 7 1819: To cash paid Nancy Eubanks for 10 months board of Caroline Eubanks, Eliza Eubanks, Louisa Eubanks, Lucretia Eubanks, Nancy Eubanks, & Thomas Eubanks, orphans of Thomas Eubanks, dec.
July 1821: To cash paid Nancy Dickson guardian of Louisa Eubanks, Lucretia Eubanks and Nancy Thomas Eubanks in part of this distribution shares of said Thomas Eubank's estate.
September 1821: To cash paid John Dickson guardian of Thomas, Caroline, James & Louisa, orphans of said deceased in part of their share. (John Dickson must have been Nancy Dickson Eubanks's brother.)

An item in the 1823 report reads: 5. To cash paid to Nancy Eubank, widow - for herself & Elijah Eubanks, orphan of said dec'd. ***
Item 6 reads: "do" for James Dickson, guardian of Thomas, Louisa, Lucretia, & Nancy Thomas Eubanks orphans of said dec'd. (So, by 1823 Nancy's brother James also was helping out with the care of Thomas's "orphans".)
Item 8: "do" for Nancy Eubanks widow for herself and Elijah Eubanks orphan of said dec'd.

1824: Item 11. "do" for John Dickson, guardian of Caroline, James & Eliza
Eubanks . . .
"do" for James Dickson, guardian of Thomas, Lucretia, Louisa & Nancy Thomas Eubanks . . .

The 1824 report was the last record of the estate of Thomas Eubanks. Elijah, the next to the oldest child, would have been 19 and Nancy Thomas, the youngest, would have been 8. Priscilla, the oldest, had evidently married Calvin Smith who was perhaps the son of Lemuel Smith who was appointed administrator of the Thomas Eubanks estate.

NOTE: "do" stands for "ditto"

*** More or less conclusive proof that Elijah Eubanks was son of Thomas Eubanks and his wife Nancy Dickson Eubanks.

NOTE: There is data available through various sources on the children of Thomas and Nancy Eubanks, but I have chosen not to include all of it in my FTM program.

The following information is in material sent to me by Roger Tate Eubank of Singapore.

"Supposedly four brothers EUBANK, Thomas, Robert, Levi and John, all born c1765-85 in Jones Co North Carolina; they may have been sons of 4-2 Elijah, 4-3 Daniel, 4-5 John, or 4-6 George above, however parents have not been established and relationship as "brothers" has not been documented and they may have been first cousins or more distantly related."

Based on the above uncertainty, I will not enter the families of Robert, Levi and John in my family tree file. Note, however that Robert settled in Alabama, Levi and John stayed in North Carolina and Thomas went to Georgia. (The Thomas who went to Georgia was perhaps the husband of Nancy Dickson and the father of my Elijah. An 1819 date of death would be consistent with a 1765-1785 date of birth.)

I found nothing in Roger's material to identify the Elijah Eubanks who died in Hancock County, Georgia about 1819 or that would identify the father of Thomas Eubanks of Hancock County, Georgia.

Notes for N
ANCY DICKSON:
After the death of her husband, Thomas Eubanks, Nancy moved to Crawford County, Georgia, where she died about 1854.

The 1840 census of Crawford County records Nancy Eubanks as head of household with 1 male 40-50 years of age; 2 females 30-40 years of age; and 1 female 60-70 years of age. In 1840, Nancy Dickson Eubanks would have been about 60 years old. Nancy's oldest son, Elijah, would have been 35. Elijah is enumerated in his own household on both the 1830 and 1840 Crawford County Census. Nancy's oldest daughter Priscilla was about 36 in 1840 and was no doubt married by then. One of the females may have been Caroline, about 29 in 1840. So, the identity of the people living with Nancy in 1840 is a mystery.
