I am researching the Thew Family in America which began in 1822 with William Thew III arriving on a sailing ship and proceeding to walk all the way to Marion County, Ohio. He came from Lincolnshire, England and served as a scout for his other family members at home. He arrived in Ohio very soon after much trouble with the many Indian tribes. He purchased land and became a successful farmer. His brother Richard Thew, wife Ann and 6 kids followed in two years with William walking all the way back to New York to meet them and bring them out some of the way to Ohio via the newly built Erie Canal. How do I know this? William sent a letter to his parents in England after the 2nd trip to Ohio in 1824. In the 1930s a relative went to England and found the letter and brought it back to America about 100 years after it was first written!
I am the great-great granddaughter of Richard's son Henry Thew. Many Thews still live in Marion County, Ohio.
I have recently completed a book entitled "Ohio Pioneers: The Chronicles of the Thew Family." It includes a lot of history and tells about the times my ancestors lived in. E-mail for more information.
