GEORGE PHELPS was born, as best we can estimate, abt. 1610, in England. No known parents, birth or Christening dates have yet been discovered that can be definitively linked to George Phelps. It has also not been proven that George is the son of William and Dorothy Phelps of Tewkesbury. It has been proven that William Phelps the emigrant, is NOT the son of William and Dorothy Phelps. In my opinion, any references citing parents for William or George should be removed unless new primary sources can be found and verified.

DNA test results performed in 2006 have yielded two descendants related to George Phelps and two descendants related to Joseph Phelps, grandson of William Phelps the emigrant. DNA comparisons of these four individuals indicate that George Phelps is not even closely related to Joseph, the grandson of William Phelps, and by extrapolation, George Phelps is not likely to be the brother of William Phelps. Additional DNA test candidates for both of these lines are needed to make any definitive assertions of fact regarding the relationship, or lack thereof, between George and William, but so far, the DNA test results are suggesting that no relationship exists.

After residing for a short time Dorchester, Massachusetts, he removed to Windsor, Connecticut in 1635.

George Phelps married (1) PHILURA RANDALL in 1637. She died April 29, 1648 in Windsor, Hartford, Connecticut.

George Phelps married (2) FRANCES (?) CLARK DEWEY November 30, 1648 in Windsor, Connecticut.

Between 1666 and 1670 George Phelps removed to Westfield, Massachusetts where he died May 08, 1687.

  • The Phelps Family Coat of Arms (183 KB)
Americana Illustrated Vol. XXI January, 1927 Number 1, Page 182 "Phelps Line" description: Arms - Per pale, or and argent, a wolf salient azure, between eight crosses, crosslett fitchee gules. Crest - A wolf's head erased azure, collared or, thereon a martlet sable. Motto - Qui transtulit sustinet. (He who transplanted, still sustains). Translated into non-Heraldic terms: A shield divided vertically into two equal parts (per pale), the right side of the shield (at your left) being gold (or), and the left side silver (argent). In the center is a blue (azure) wolf standing on its two hind legs and pawing the air (salient). The wolf is surrounded by eight crosses, red (gules) in color, the three upper arms of each cross are crossed again which makes it the "crosslet" form. But the lower arm, instead of being crossed, is pointed "fitchee:" thus the whole name for the cross as pictured is "cross crosslet fitchee." The crest is a blue (azure) wolf's head violently torn from the body with hair hanging jagged (erased)which is wearing a gold (or) collar. A black (sable) footless swallow (martlet)is either on the collar or on the wolf's head depending upon the interpretation of the punctuation. Several mottoes have been used by the Phelps families, and some Arms have been registered without any mottoes. -- Veritas sine timor (Truth without fear) -- Crux Fidei Lux (The cross is the light of faith) -- Qui transtulit sustinet. (He who transplanted, still sustains) -- Respice finem (respect boundaries or territory)

  • Identifying George P-?- of the Recovery, 1633/4 (26 KB)
John Plummer wrote an article examining the March 31, 1633 voyage of the Recovery of London, with Gabriel Cornish as its master, sailing from Weymouth in Dorsetshire to New England. The names of twenty-six passengers are given; but for one of these, George P--?--, the script is not fully readable. Three possible candidates are examined, George Phelps, George Proctor, and George Parkhurst.

By Margaret P. Swanson. The long-awaited Volume III of "The Great Migration Begins: Immigrants to New England 1620-1633", by Robert Charles Anderson (Boston NEHGS: 1995) has finally been released. Of particular interest descendants of the emigrants William and George Phelps.
  • Phylyppe Wills, Lichfield Index, 1516-1652 (168 KB)
I examined "The British Record Society, The Index Library, V.7, Calendar of Wills & Administrations in the consistory court of the Bishop of Lichfield & Coventry 1516-1652. Published 1892" and documented all of the variations of Phelps or Phillips in Staffordshire, Shropshire, Derby and Warwick. I then reviewed each roll of microfilm for the counties of Staffordshire and Shropshire record by record documenting the exact spelling of names in the wills and administrations. There were no (0) occurrences of the surname Phelps between 1516 and 1650. Furthermore, in researching the wills of the Phylyppe families of Checkley from the early 1500s to the 1700s, I have not found a single instance in their lineage where the spelling evolved to "Phelps".

  • Life of George Phelps - (cir. 1610-1687) (27 KB)
GEORGE PHELPS was born Abt. 1610, England. This date would put his age at 20-24 when he emigrated, abt. 25 when he was chosen a Freeman, abt. 27 when he first married, abt. 44 when his youngest son Nathaniel was born, and abt. 77 when he died. No known parents, birth or Christening dates have yet been discovered that can be definitively linked to George Phelps but it has been proven that he is NOT the son of William and Dorothy Phelps of Tewkesbury.
