| Hello and Welcome! The SMITH ancestry I am studying lived in St. Joseph County, IN. (Lakeville, North Liberty and Mishawaka) from 1854. Earliest known ancestors were Christian and Amelia(Hildebrand) SMITH who arrived in 1854 from Merseburg, Prussia, where their surnames were SCHMIDT. Originally, Christian was known in Germany as Johann Andreas Gottlieb Schmidt, while his wife Amelia was known as Amalie Friederika Augusta Hildebrandt. Christian and Amelia had six children in Germany, only four of which made the trip from Hamburg to America (May-Jul 1854). Their four known children were Theodore (1841-1920), Julius (1852-1948) of Nebraska, Charles Ferdinand (1833-1908) of Wilson, Kansas, and Clara (b. 1845) of Mishawaka, IN who later married a Frederick Shoepflin. Theodore and brother Ferdinand were Indiana Civil War veterans; Theodore a member of the GAR (Grand Army of the Republic). Other ancestral grandparents of immediate interest include the FRY family who were socially acquainted with the SMITHS and were from the St Joseph County area. The OYLER Family arrived prior to 1850 and settled in Greene Township, a few miles south of South Bend. William & Elizabeth and children John and Mary Emeline. Mary Emeline Oyler married Ferdinand Smith briefly giving birth to Louis Colfax Smith before remarrying Michael Woollet of Greene Twp. Both Mary and Michael are buried in Mishawaka City Cemetery. I am willing to share my family's information with others; Please see my home page reports for details. |
