| There is a cluster of Teas surnames in Lowland Scotland from 1450 and onward. In 1613, William Teas arrived in Donegal, Ulster, again there is list of Teas surnames in Ulster. About 1725, John Teas arrived in Pennsylvania with other Scotch Irish. His son, Thomas, settled in New London, Virginia about 1760. Much of the family still lives in that area. Because of Thomas' military service, he was granted land along the Ohio River. His son, Stephen, took up the land but under the last name of Teays (due, I believe, to his German mother subsituting the German letter "B" for sound "ss" which the English-speaking officials transcribed as "ys" or now seen as Teays). In Lowland Scotland the Roman georapher Ptolomy describes the tribe of Tais in his work of 150 AD. They were a part of the Pict Group. This is supported by the existence of hill Teass in Fife. The Leslie family records date it back to 1250 AD. |
